Colored pencils are an art medium constructed of a narrow, pigmented core encased in a wooden cylindrical case used to create colored drawings. There are three main types of colored pencils: wax-based, oil-based, and water-soluble.

The use of wax-based media in crayons can be traced back to the Greek Golden Age. The manufacturing of colored pencils was invented over 200 years ago. Only the core was mass-manufactured during the Industrial Revolution and is still manufactured in the same way today.
